Recycling in the home is now becoming the norm, with certain regions and localities have truly excellent recycling facilities to the point that almost all household waste is recycled. With businesses however, things are still lagging behind in some areas, mainly because it is their responsibility to establish recycling processes, rather than the local authority providing it for them. The question is; is your business doing its bit for the environment?
Paper
Even in today’s digital world, paper is a common sight in most offices, and it’s likely to be one of the most commonly thrown away items. The thing is, paper is extremely easy to recycle, and there really isn’t an excuse not to. Have a dedicated paper bin in your office, and educate all of your employees so that it becomes second nature to simply throw paper waste into the recycling. Remember that anything confidential must be securely shredded, and you might need a third part like Lombard Recycling to help you.
Plastic
This is a tricky one, because not all plastic is recyclable in all areas. However, lots of plastics are, and they can be easily identified by their recycling code, which is a simple number you can use to tally up with whatever recycling provider you’re using. Surprisingly one of the largest producers of waste is not the business itself, but employees on their lunch breaks. While they might be used to recycling their packaging at home, it’s not always common for them to do the same at work, and you must provide for them.
Electricals
Broken computers and peripherals really shouldn’t be simply thrown away into waste. They often contain parts and materials that can be reused. A quick google will show you all of the places locally that will be happy to take and recycle your electrical goods. If you’ve got a good relationship with them, they’ll often come and collect you, which means there’s no reason throw out old electronics. There’s a useful guide for you to use here.
Food
Even if your business isn’t in the food industry, we’ve already mentioned the impact your employees can have. Even in a small office, a couple of bags of waste can be produced each day, just from people eating. Again, there are companies out there that will collect your waste, but if you’re lucky enough to have some outdoor space, composting food waste is a great environmental benefit.
