The advice shared by marketing guru Matt Morris in this video is perfect for any manager or business owner leading a team in a sales-driven environment.
Once most sales managers get to a certain point in their career, they’re typically drawn to the lure of sitting behind a cozy desk and dishing out orders to their underlings. Unfortunately, it’s this lazy approach that often curbs the performance of the team.
I’ve worked in a number of sales jobs, from a Kirby Vacuum Guy, to a Retail Upseller, to one of those guys who walks around trying to sell discount schwag to passersby out of my duffle bag. Though I’ll admit that I’m more the “chicken” type described in the video when it comes to direct selling; I was always more motivated when working for managers who led by example — actually showing they could actually practice what they were preaching to me day-in and day-out..
So it really is all about leading by example. Your passion and talents as a leader will most certainly trickle down to the team. Much in the same way that negativity and laziness do, when you have a team leader who’s really just a messy chicken taking up a seat in the office.
