Jon Petz wrote the best-seller “Boring Meetings Suck.” He also travels the world telling people how to make them NOT suck.
Here he gives some quick tips on how to host business meetings that don’t bore the participants and which end up producing results:
Mission and outcome statement:
Why are you having it and what will the attendees walk out the door with?
While it can seem cheesy, you won’t get a sit down with billionaire CEO’s without having a clear mission statement — they simply won’t bother.
A clear mission and outcome is the most effective way to get people’s respect and let them know you have no intention to waste their valuable time.
Mark Cuban is someone who comes to mind. He says if you don’t state a clear outcome right off the top, experience has taught him you’re just wasting his time.
Imagine how your employees feel; especially if it’s an off-the-clock meeting, or they simply have better things to do?
One thing Petz said that’s so true is that meetings that start without a clear outcome almost always turn out to be mindless discussions that only lead to more meetings.
