Running a business website and displaying web banners to support your site’s operational? If so, you need to stop what you are doing right now and read this post carefully, as I will reveal to you some facts that what you’ve been told about banner ad placements is wrong.
How wrong? Well, have you been advised that to improve your click-through-rate (CTR) of your ads, you need to place them above the fold? I know I’ve heard that. Many, many times.
No wonder my banner ads have got fewer and fewer CTR – why? Because, honestly, that advice sucks.
Here’s the cold, hard truth: People will NOT see your banner ads if they are placed on the typical locations. This is called the banner blindness.
Instead, cleverly placed banner ads can improve your CTR significantly, which includes placing the ads in between content, as one of the stuffs you have in your website’s sidebar, and so on. This is called ‘native’ ad – ad placements that blend in really well with the site content and layout, as if they are part of the site.
How big is the impact of following the wrong advice? HUGE. According to this infographic, the difference between the conventional above the fold ad placement and native ad placement is significant: 77 percent of above the fold ads vs. 200 percent of native ads. Check this out for more interesting findings.
